1. Train mindfulness and clean your house to avoid impulse buying.

Follow Marie Kondo, a japanese best-selling author and organising consultant, whose “KonMari Method” of decluttering and organising houses has become an international phenomenon. Try her tips on how to organise your house, throw away everything that doesn’t “spark joy” starting from clothes and finishing at the valuable souvernirs. This way, not only you will make a review of all the things that you already have, but by throwing away things that are not making you happy anymore, you’ll also learn to follow your intuition, you’ll understand what you really want, like and need in your life. Meditate and practice mindfulness to clean your mind from intrusive thoughts and to understand your priorities. Being equipped in the ability to focus, in the knowledge about your possesions and priorities, as well as in the skill of evaluating what you REALLY want and need, you will be less susceptible for impulse buying at the supermarket!

2. Order your fridge and pantry regularly.

Give your fridge a monthly clean and trash everything which you haven’t used for the last month. All the jars and boxes which you’ve already forgotten about – they must go! Also, arrange your pantry in a way, where you can see all the items. If you keep everything visible, neat and clean, it will be much easier to plan your shopping. Again, follow Marie Kondo, who in her bestseller book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” recommends putting all your items vertically, to make them better visible. This includes also your fridge – she even puts the carrots in a vertical way! To evaluate your “inventory” better, you can also follow the trick from Ella Woodward, best-selling author of books about healthy and delicious cooking and eating, who in her book “Delicously Ella Every Day” recommends to put some of the nuts or grains into jars. Those tips will help you quickly control the levels of what you have and decide what you need to buy.

3. Review what you already have in your kitchen.

Every time before going for shopping, make an inventory of what you have. Write down what is finishing and what you need to buy. You will avoid buying the same products and doubling them, and also you will save some space and keep your inventory clear. You should know by now why you need to have a clear inventory from points 1 and 2.

4. Process “ugly” food creatively to avoid waste.

After review of your inventory, decide what you can do with all the leftovers or a bit older products (but still good to eat). Get creative and make some new dish! Old and a bit ugly fruits can be turned into smoothies or cakes, and veggies can be cooked as a soup. If you know that you’ll not use all your veggies before they get rotten, clean them and cut in smaller pieces and freeze them.

5. Prepare your body – don’t go hungry or tired!

Did you notice that when you’re hungry or tired, it’s really easy to become irritated? Then, quite often you start fighting with others, blaming them, looking for their faults. It’s quite simple: your body and brain need to have the right amount of “fuel” to function properly and keep you in a good mood. When your “fuel” is low, you’re not able to focus, you make mistakes. In this state of mind it’s much easier for you to fall in multiple traps into the supermarkets, which lure you into buying more, more, more! Also, when you’re hungry, you will buy more food than you need, your eyes will make you switch into “instincutal  / survival mode” and you might end up with an amount of food which you’re not able to eat, and you’ll have to trash. So before shopping, get yourself in good condition to avoid impulse buying and producing waste!
