We’re back with another Bite of Good News with GreenJinn! This month is Plastic Free July, so we thought we’d share some positive stories from around the world where individuals, communities and businesses are doing their bit to help protect our environment.
Wimbledon ditches plastic
Wimbledon and Evian launched a new refillable system, that will enable some of the world’s biggest tennis stars to ditch single-use plastics bottles during the tournament! 🎾
Cardboard vs. Plastic
Single use plastic trays for steaks sold at Sainsbury’s are to be replaced with a cardboard alternative from this week, set to reduce the product’s plastic content by 70% 🥩
Plastic Alternative?
Researchers at the University of Hong Kong have created a biodegradable material using bacterial cellulose that could be used for packaging to replace single-use plastics on a large scale 👨🔬
New Zealand ditches plastic
The thin plastic bags used for fruit & veg have been outlawed in New Zealand. This move is expected to prevent 150 million plastic bags from accumulating annually 🥕
Brits love reusables
Around 60% of Brits now carry a reusable water bottle compared to just 20% 8 years ago. Despite this progress, there’s still a long way to go to break the UK’s 10 million disposable water bottles a day habit 💪
