A (not so typical) day at The Felix Project with GreenJinn

Today is Random Acts of Kindness day, so we wanted to share our experience volunteering at the Felix Project.πŸ’š On Tuesday, a few of us went to our partner charity, The Felix Project, to volunteer and help them out at their warehouse. The Felix Project works to save surplus foods from suppliers and redistributes it to charities and schools in an effort to end food waste and help those in need. As a food and drink company, we feel very strongly about their mission and help out whenever we can.

Upon arrival, we were given our boots and high-vis vests (all the safety requirements!🦺) and were set off on our tasks. In the morning, we needed to sort out the food shipments that had come in from suppliers and categorise them so that redistribution runs smoothly. They get food donations from all over, from supermarkets such as Tesco, to Hello Fresh and straight from brands such as innocent. It’s truly eye opening to see how much food would usually get thrown away because it has passed the best before date. The Felix Project recognises that this food can still be eaten and limits the amount of waste.

After sorting and categorising the food that was delivered, we began sorting for different charities. Charities and schools give The Felix Project their wish list, a list of items that they need and we try our best to stick to the list given the supply that we have on the day. The most heavily requested items are usually dairy products and meat and fish.πŸ₯›πŸ₯© Unfortunately, the shipment on this Tuesday did not include many pallets of meat and fish, so we needed to give some of the charities ready meals instead. January and February are usually the most difficult months for The Felix Project because they get less products delivered to them after Christmas and can hence deliver less to their charities. Every donation really goes a long way.🀝

As the day went on, we realised how quickly everything was moving, one because there was the maximum amount of volunteers there that day but also because we had really gotten into the swing of things!πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ This was of course great for the Felix Project, because we were able to be efficient with our tasks and get all the sorting for charities ready for the afternoon delivery. Volunteering at The Felix Project is always an extremely rewarding experience and we were so happy that we were able to help them during their most difficult time.

If you’re able to, in honour of Random Acts of Kindness day, sign up to volunteer at your local charity of your choice or donate money to those who need it most during this time.πŸ’š
